Akwa Ibom State Government has announced the release of four suspected COVID-19 cases who have been confirmed negative and the admission of one positive case into the isolation facility.

The Commissioner for Health and COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Dominic Ukpong, gave the confirmation while interacting with newsmen at the Ibom Multi-Specialty Hospital, Uyo, on Friday.

Dr. Ukpong said the confirmation followed the release of five results of the thirty-one samples that were sent to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) by the Akwa Ibom State COVID-19 Management Committee testing following contact tracing and suspicions based on laid down procedure.

The thirty-one suspected cases, according to the Health boss, have been kept at the holding area while awaiting their test results from the NCDC.

He said it was the wish of the State that the remaining results which, he hinted, were being expected later in the evening will be more of negatives, so as to encourage return to normalcy.

“We recently tested thirty-one patients and we have started getting the results. The final results will be coming in this evening. We’ve got five results so far and of the five results, four are actually negative, so we discharge them,” Dr. Ukpong said.

Dr. Ukpong expressed regret over alleged report that some commercial transporters had facemasks which they handed out to passengers to use while on board their vehicles and retrieved them upon their disembarking so as to be used by another passenger.

He described such sharing as dangerous and unacceptable, stressing that every person should have their personal masks.

The Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Hospital Management Board, Dr. David Udoumoh, said the five results calls for joy and thanksgiving to God, as it has dowsed COVID-19: A’Ibom discharges four patients much of the apprehension and confusion that trailed call for testing of the thirty-one suspected cases.

Udoumoh clarified that testing were done based on protocol and case management requirements and not just on feelings, affirming that the four out of five cases whose results have been received have tested sufficiently negative to be discharged from the holding area.
