Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records Golden boy and Headies Next Rated artiste, Rema has been making among the top 10 list on Twitter trends on his 21st birthday and many conversations cropped up around him.
The protégé has been remarkable since joining arguably the country’s finest record labels few years ago.
Rema has been phenomenal dropping several hit songs, topping several charts, and getting massive international recognitions in the past few months without an album and he is just clocking 21.
The Nigerian music industry has often been used to seeing the young ones take over from the outgoings. The likes of Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Olamide, etc came into the limelight after the likes of Banky W, Eldee, 2face, Dbanj, etc were gradually fading and for close to a decade.
These sets have shaped the African Music industry, earning several recognitions and taking the Afrobeats sound to the international stage.
Rema at his age can also be likened to the likes of Davido and Wizkid, though many people believed the “Bounce” crooner is doing far much more. StarBoy, Wizkid will be 31 in July while Davido will be 29 in November.
The duo have achieved enormous recognition, earned several awards, and got numerous international recognitions since they kicked off about a decade ago.
Just like Rema both started at a tender age while they were a little close to hitting a score and since then have been increasing the scores.
Let’s discuss what Davido and Wizkid career looked like when they were 21.
At the of 19, in 2011, Davido rose to fame after releasing “Dami Duro“, the second single from his debut studio album Omo Baba Olowo.
The singer had earlier dropped a project with Naeto C titled “Back When” which was self-produced and gathered massive positive reviews from music critics.
In 2012, at the age of 20, Davido had already dropped an album “Omo Baba Olowo” which has several artistes including the veteran 2Face, B-Red, K Switch, and Naeto C.
While this was a major achievement for Davido back then, some have said he had to stand on the shoulder of other established artistes to rise.
This however is what Rema boasts of, as he has not done any collaboration with an artist since he started his journey to the top.
Davido however went on to win the Next Rated award at The Headies the same year and his album which is a blend of Afropop and hip hop, also winning the Best RnB/Pop album at Headies the next year.
It also got nominations for Album of the Year at the Headies 2013 and also at NEA Awards.
In 2013, at age 21 which is Rema’s present age, Davido had released chart-topping songs such as “Gobe” and the street anthem “Skelewu” which was accompanied by a viral dance.
Both songs ended up as two of Davido’s songs on the Top 10 Premium Times Song of the Year.
Rema and Wizkid have a similar story different from Davido. While the duo needed a record label before they can be heard, Davido rose up as an independent artiste.
Wizkid has been said to be the most decorated Nigerian artist ever (the most decorated African artist internationally), and one of the most revolutionary Afro-pop artists of the modern era.
In 2009, at age 19, Ayo Balogun was signed to Banky W’s record label, EME. In 2009, Wizkid started his preparation for his album Superstar but it was not until January that he released his first major hit “Holla at Your Boy” which was nominated for Best Pop Single and earned him The Headies Next Rated Artiste Award in 2010.
The music video was nominated for Most Gifted Newcomer Video at the 2011 Channel O Music Video Awards.
The album incorporated with elements of Afrobeats, R&B, dancehall, and reggae contains hit songs such as “Don’t Dull“, “Tease Me“, and others with guest appearances from Banky W, Skales, D’Prince, and Wande Coal.
The Superstar garnered Best Album of the Year at the 2012 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, and was nominated for Album of the Year at The Headies 2012. At this age, Wizkid was 21.
At 21, Rema is another extraordinary talent on his own with 2 Minidiscs EPS, over 3.6M Monthly Spotify listeners, and Chart-topping songs such as “Ginger” and “Bounce“.
The young lad has also won the Headies Next Rated which was won by both Davido and Wizkid, Sound city MVP, MOBO nomination alongside Wizkid & Burna Boy and also made Obama’s annual playlist.
While Rema might not be at the level Wizkid and Davido are now, do you think he did more than they did while they were his age.
