Reports in Spain this week claimed Messi had frozen contract talks with Barcelona after months of negotiations.
Messi’s current deal expires next summer and Barcelona’s talisman was on track to pen a new long-term deal before making a drastic U-turn.
BBC Sport and Guillem Balague claim Messi has had enough of the way he is treated at the club and outlined the reasons the superstar wants to leave the Spanish giants.
Messi is ‘fed up’ being accused of running the La Liga side, deciding the head coach, having final say on signings and team selection and is disillusioned with the abilities of the club’s hierarchy.
The Argentine considers the club bosses to have made huge mistakes in the transfer market and coaching department and is frustrated the blame for those errors keep being placed at his feet.
Messi has spent his entire senior career at Barcelona having made his debut as a 16-year-old in 2003.
Barcelona has found itself in turmoil in recent months, with the club’s finances in dire straits and performances way below par.
The players, spearheaded by Messi, agreed to a 70 per cent wage cut during the coronavirus pandemic.
Messi has been identified as a prime reason for Barcelona’s troubles and the 33-year-old is tired of being blamed for the club’s woes. Critics say Messi was instrumental in the arrival of Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid a year ago, but now is pushing for the club to sell him.
It is also claimed Messi was responsible for the sacking of Tata Martino and the hiring of Quique Setien.
In actuality, Messi continues to do all he can to make Griezmann feel at home in Barcelona, along with the help of striker Luis Suarez. But he is already losing faith in head coach Setien and Barcelona’s all-time record goalscorer is desperate for the team to improve and begin to seriously compete in the Champions League again.
The shock U-turn from Messi is not expected to be received as a final decision, but a warning to the club to respond to their failings.
The shock news comes just as Barcelona appear set to miss out on the La Liga title to Real Madrid. Barcelona are four points behind their bitter rivals with five games left to play.
