INEC trains Election Officials(NYSC Corp Members) Ahead of January 25, 2020 Re-run Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced training of election officials for the conduct of 28 re-run elections in 12 states across the country.

The elections scheduled for 25th January 2020, are distributed across Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Cross River, Imo, Kaduna, Kano, Niger, Ogun, and Sokoto states.

The Electoral Institute (TEI), INECs Research and Training arm, on Tuesday, 6th January 2020 began a two-day training of Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs) with the aim of equipping the officers with the requisite skills to organize and conduct training on polling and counting procedures as well as to effectively perform the electoral functions of required of SPOs.

According to the Director General of the Electoral Institute, Dr. Sa’ad Umar, the training is being conducted simultaneously in two streams, with states like Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Niger and Benue states making the first stream.



Modules treated on the 1st day of the training include Introduction and General Background; Polling Day and Time, Code of Conduct for Personnel, who can vote and where? Election Materials; Sensitive and Non-Sensitive Materials, Polling procedure and Discussion on using the PU Booklet.

The 2nd stream of the training is scheduled to hold on the 13th -14th January 2020 and comprises of Sokoto, Imo, Akwa-ibom, Abia, Cross River and Ogun States.

It would be recalled that on the 5th of December 2019, the Commission released a statement on the decision to conduct 28 outstanding Court ordered rerun elections arising from the conduct of the 2019 general elections on the 25th of January 2020.

The statement signed by the Chairman of the Commission’s Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Festus Okoye Esq., gave a breakdown of the elections to be conducted as; 1 Senatorial, 12 Federal Constituencies, and 15 State Assembly elections.
