5 Albums That Impacted The Nigerian Music Scene (No. 1 Was A Game Changer)

These were albums we enjoyed then regardless of who was supporting them or the fact that they were new to the scene at that period.

More than ten years ago, the situation in the music industry was quite different. Then, we were so much absorbed in RnB and afrobeats had started to emerge.

There was relatively less pop music. D’banj was propelling the afrobeats game, Psquare were so much invested in RnB, especially with their dancing prowess and 2face also ruled the airwaves with his anthemic love songs.

But the game would soon change with the emergence of new acts. With them, came a fresh injection of new sounds the industry would later accept as the new cool.

But which albums changed the game?

1. Wande Coal – Mushin 2 MoHits

Many had been hearing of Wande from Ololufe which would later go on to win the Next Rated Award in 2009. When the album dropped in 2010, it was balanced on topics that resonated with youths: love, girls, and life generally.

There was something unique about this sound and the album would later go on to inspire the second album on our list.

2. WizKid – Superstar

Continuing on that pedestal of Wande Coal’s pop mantra, WizKid was here telling his own story and with impressive lyrical depth on beats that just felt so good.

The inspirational No lele, love ballads Gidi girl, Love my baby and party starters, What You Wanna Do, Shout Out. 17 tracks, no blemish.

3. Olamide – Rapsodi

You probably heard Eni Duro and uttered “who be this guy” with a relentless rap style. The success of Eni Duro will later culminate in the album, Rapsodi, his debut LP.

Where Dagrin stopped, Olamide continued and took it to another level. Within a short period, everyone adopted the indigenous route. Rap in your language.

4. Asa – Asha

With her debut album, Asha, Asa introduced and defined what alternative truly is in Nigeria.

With hits like Jailer, Bibanke, Fire on the mountain would later go on to be hits in an industry dominated by mainstream RnB and Afrobeats. Pace setter.

5. MI – MI2

This particular album transformed the rap scene in Nigeria. Elite, simple, and easy to understand rap. MI2 placed MI as the best in the game in Africa. Storytelling was at its peak here. Action Film, Nobody, One Naira ruled the airwaves then.
